TOUR DIRECTIONS BY BOAT

Tour directions start at the Halesford Bridge; other starting points may be used.  As you head downstream (toward the dam) odd-numbered (green) channel markers will be on your right, and even-numbered (red) markers on your left; lower numbers are closer to the dam.  A lake map is useful to help locate the coves and markers.  Look for orange balloons marking each dock.  Attendants at each dock will help you; do not use any dock which is unattended.  Watch for shoals and low water markers, especially near some of the docks, islands, and markers.  Several homes have very steep walkways from the dock to the house; these walkways should not be attempted by the elderly or infirm.  GPS coordinates are given for each dock.

Proceed south (toward the dam) to R27.  Turn sharp right into cove just past R27 (beyond yellow house with party deck, and before the island).  Proceed straight to khaki dock on left, after 2nd point of land. Dock is across from white gazebo in the water, on opposite side of cove.  GPS N37deg.  07.169 min; W079 deg, 39.638 min.

Proceed toward main channel of river.  At last point of land, turn right, and pass between that point of land and island on left.  Bear right into Becky's Creek (note:  shallow water at creek entrance).  Proceed toward marina at head of cove.  After passing through 3 no-wake markers, turn  left into 1st cove beyond the markers (note:  large grey/white house with stone embankment at cove entrance).  Note:  very steep gravel walk from dock to house.  GPS  N37 deg. 06.386 min; W079 deg.  40.391 min.

Return to main channel, and turn right.  Proceed approx. 1 mile toward dam, and turn right at R25.  Turn right into 1st cove on right, to 2nd dock on left side of this cove.  Note:  very steep walk from dock to house.  GPS  N37 deg.  05.962 min;  W079 deg  38.812 min.

Return to Roanoke River, and cross river.  Turn left into large cove past R24; keep to right side of this cove.  Dock is in third small cove, on the right.  Look for fenced tennis court at far side of entrance to this small cove. GPS  N37 deg.  06.208 min;  W079 deg.  37.622 min.

Return to Roanoke River, and turn left.  Cross river after passing R22.  After passing R17, head toward blue water tower on right.  Pass water tower, and turn right just past small island at R15;  proceed to 2nd dock on the right.  Keep well clear of shallow water near R15.  GPS  N37 deg.  04.900 min;  W 079 deg.  37.674 min.

Proceed straight ahead (toward mountain), staying on right side of river.  Turn right at R11A, and pass through 3 No-Wake markers, to 1st house on left past markers.  GPS  N37 deg  3.559 min;  W  079 deg.  36.817 min.

2.  MasonMason water view

Return to river and turn right.  Keep to left of R11 and Rabbit Island (but not too far from R11; there are shoal markers on opposite side of channel).  Proceed ahead, crossing river as you do so, and heading toward R8.  After you pass R8, turn left (toward the dam).  Pass to right of R6, R4 and R2.  After passing R2, make left turn into large cove, then proceed straight ahead approx. 3/4 mile to a point between Rock Island (on right) and point of land (on left).  We will try to place orange marker balls in water at this point.  After passing these balls, proceed straight about 1/2 mile to house.  GPS  N37 deg.  03.766 min;  W079 deg. 33.182 min.

Return to Roanoke River.  Turn right at R2 and proceed away from dam.  Turn left after passing B1 (on your left), and cross to far side of Blackwater River.  Head toward B2.  Keep to left of B2, B4, B6 B8 and B8A.  Proceed along right side of Blackwater River about 3/4 mile and enter 2nd cove on right past B8A.  Keep to center of cove entrance; shallow water on both sides.  Brick house is straight ahead.  GPS  N37 deg.  03.041 min;  W 079 deg.  37.596 min.
